I never realized how dependent I was on my laptop for writing until it died on me. Oh, I can still write without it but it's not the same. My desktop is in my living room...along with the rest of the freaking universe. Kids, husbands, friends, dogs. I'm surprised we don't see the occasional squirrel or Al Gore scurrying through my living room. I do wear headphones when I am writing but it's still hard to focus on writing porn with a circus behind me. I've also noticed that my son's skill in reading over my shoulder is directly proportional to my speed at hitting the minimize function.

My bedroom is much more conducive to writing. It's quieter, only Spiderman can read over my shoulder if he so chose to peek through the window behind me, the bed is comfy and the air conditioner is with me.

I need a new laptop. :P

I have the opposite problem. For some reason I can't seem to write on my laptop. For instance, I've been sitting at a coffee shop for the past 2+ hours with every intention of writing, and I've gotten absolutely NOTHING done.

I don't know what it is, but I don't seem to make any progress unless I'm sitting in front of my desktop, which is located in my big, dark, comfy basement....

Of course, the chances of me sitting in front of the desktop for any considerable amount of time - before getting distracted by the dog, the door, the phone, or some chores to do around the house - are pretty much NULL.

I am now picturing Al Gore skulking around on your ceiling like Robert Goulet in one of those Emerald Nuts commercials. This is a great image. ;D

I hope you get a new laptop. I am assuming you're broke like the rest of us and can't afford to buy one? You might find out if there's a local Freecycle group in your area and put up a "Wanted" post. I see laptops up for grabs on my local Freecycle board all the time as people buy new ones and Freecycle their old ones.

Broke, ah, yes. Summer is always broke time for me because my day care bill more than doubles with my kids out of school. So I'm just looking sorrowfully at laptops until I weasel a way to get one. It's just a matter of properly balancing my needs vs my wants. *G*

Freecycle in my area never has anything that cool for longer than two seconds. Living in city with one of the highest unemployment rates in the country has its disadvantages.

Images of Al Gore crab walking, skittering, across my living room floor haunt me...
